Dear Lance,
C.S.Lewis, was no mathematician, in fact he was accepted to Oxford University just before the 1st World War, to study English (Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English). He had been taken out of "school" to study under a tutor called Kirk, when ready to enter Oxford there were 2 exams to take, one of English etc & one on mathematics which he failed twice. He was studying some English History subjects & then drafted into the Army, he served in France & was wounded twice, the last time sent home to recover. When the war ended the exams expected to be passed were not necessary as he was a war veteran. Hence he could therefore study & become the great literary teacher that he is renown for.

Thanks for taking the trouble to respond (here and after my previous post). I'm sure that like me you'd welcome the opportunity of a constructive conversation. To that end, I'd welcome a follow-up comment rephrasing your concerns and questions in a less aggressive way.

Ok, so tell us, why do you feel you can set up a system where the rules say I must "opt out" of religious instruction that you give in a public school?

What gives you the right to impose on me the requirement to declare the status of "conscientious objection" in an institutions designed to treat all beliefs equally.

Why is it fair to convey 3% of the curriculum time in a school paid for by public funds to your church? Why do you demand to have this grant?

The government recognizes and supports your faith by exempting your from taxes and treating you as a charity, and setting aside weekends during which it makes no demands to attend school (historically this was in deference to worship) why is this not enough support? Why do you also demand legislation to operate ministry during the 6 hours allocated for school?

Why should there be state legislation in favor of the teaching of religion by your church during an activity that is compulsory?

To show us that you are sincere about wanting to actually have a discussion, why don't you articulate what you think the moral and ethical reasons for "secular" public institutions are?

There are principles of public education, one is that instruction given be "secular". However, if you read the law, it is plain that the provision of SRI is presented as an "exception" to the "principle". There are sometimes good reasons to make exceptions to principles. What to you propose the reasons are that we allow this exception?

You have implied that Evonne Paddison has been quoted out of context, in what way has she been misquoted or not taken in context? Wasn't her speech about the strategic and missional nature of her organization, and a clear statement that as leader of this group it was her intention to use the policy for the purposes of "making disciples" (ie. believers) of children? Please support the idea that she has been misquoted or retract the accusation.

Lance, when you are done whinging about the outbreak of reporting on the system of religious instruction that is being widely criticized by very respected members of your own church, is destructive to your faith, and very hurtful to families who wish to raise their children in faiths other than your own and want to have a discussion or actually talk to someone rather than pontificate about the tone or stridency of words that others choose to decry the clearly dishonest character of what is going on in our schools and how parents actually feel about it, there are many who will happily oblige.

First, it would be useful for your to actually read the history of this issue and see how we got to were we are now, with a state funded parachurch claiming an explicit right to "preach" in our schools.

The second thing you should do is carefully read the words and statements that have been made by Evonne Paddison, the discredited and now vanished CEO of ACCESS Ministry.

Once you've done those things, you'll be in a position to recognize that the critics of what are going on are being honest and the self interested evangelical activists who are using terms like "go and make disciples" are not being misquoted or having their words twisted.

Paddison gave an extended 30 min exposition of the strategic and missional character of her ministry, she clearly articulates the purpose of her work and reason that it matters to her as an evangelist. She calls our schools, "australia's greatest mission field".

Our schools are not a place for you, or anyone to conduct "mission" ... go sell it in Africa, we aren't buying.
